A hands-on, sample-based groovestation

Slice, chop and repitch anything. Five play engines - Oneshot, Repitch, Stretch, Slice and Grid - each with play modes, and a lo-fi strip with bit + sample-rate reduction and Overdrive. The Editor is a tab of its own, with the bank’s 16 pads on a rail across the top and everything that shapes the sound folded into one panel, so the waveform gets the screen: pinch in until every single sample is a dot, drag the fades on the wave itself, crop to the trimmed region and take it back again. The pad rail marks whichever pad is sounding - on Preview as much as under the sequencer - and on a chopped sample the playing slice lights its own segment.

Record a loop that is already in time.
Pick a musical length - the playing pattern, or one, two, three or four bars - and the recorder waits for the bar line, starts on it and stops where the sequencer says the bar ends. The reverb tail wraps around the seam instead of being cut off, and a take that runs long or short is rounded to the whole bar. Record from mic, line-in or resample the master.

Give every pad something that moves.
Three LFOs, a filter envelope and velocity sit under the knob row, one page at a time, and each source keeps its own colour on the knobs it drives - the ring around Cutoff tells you what is moving it, while the knob itself still shows the value you set. Send them to volume, pan, pitch, cutoff, resonance, the envelope stages, bit depth, sample rate, Overdrive, either aux send, sample start, the slice, the hard gate - or the Randomator’s own strength, so the track drifts between its sound and its variation. Rates run free from 0.01 to 20 Hz or lock to the tempo, from eight bars down to a 1/32. On iPad and Mac.

Lock any parameter to any step.
Parameter locks for micro-timing, velocity, pan, pitch, gate and sample start - plus per-step sample, filter and envelope locks, so a step can play another pad’s sound through its own filter and envelope while the track keeps its mixer strip and choke. Eight trig conditions and retrig give every step its own behaviour. The grid always draws one bar: a longer pattern is more pages, the way a step sequencer with a page button has always worked, and the playing bar stays teal whether you are looking at it or not. Grid, Orbit and Euclid modes share one pattern - Orbit and Euclid on iPad and Mac.

Draw how hard it hits.
Flip the Sequencer from Notes to Velocity and the grid stops placing steps: the work moves to the lane under the row. Draw across it and one stroke shapes a whole track - each bar is a step, empty cells are skipped, and the stroke undoes as a single edit. Four track tools do the same job in one press. On iPad and Mac.

Set the track once. Lock the exceptions.
Every track has a defaults dialog: values that apply to all its steps, with per-step locks overriding on top. Set micro timing, velocity, pan, pitch, length, sample start, retrig and trig condition, swap the track’s sample for any of the 16 pads or a new file, and shape it with one of 16 filter engines and an ADR amp envelope with a curve display.

Fill the whole kit in one tap.
Genre-weighted probability maps write all 16 tracks at once, in the genre you picked. Sixteen genres, each with its own tempo window, from boom bap to jungle. Timing and velocity follow measured drumming - swing as micro-timing per channel, ghost notes placed by rule, channels answering each other - and a pass that lands too close to the last one is rolled again. Every part of that feel is a switch you can turn off. Euclid and Orbit stay in the sequencer, where they belong: they shape one track, this fills the kit.

Mix it like hardware.
Sixteen channel strips with HI, MID and LO on the face and a full console EQ behind them, an insert slot, a character override and two aux sends, into a master chain that runs character, then compressor, then soft clip, then the fader - with real L/R metering and a VU. Every knob shows its value in a bubble while you turn it, and any strip can leave on its own output instead of the master.

Arrange it, then take it anywhere.
Chain patterns into a tracker-style song of up to thirty-two rows with per-row mutes. Then one Export dialog gets the audio out: bounce the loop, the whole song or one WAV per track, or hand the arrangement to your DAW - swing, groove, micro-timing and trig conditions baked into the timeline.

One sample. Sixteen notes.
Switch the grid from Drum to Chromatic and all sixteen pads play one sample instead of sixteen sounds. The lowest note sits bottom left and climbs to the right and upward, every cell labelled with its note and shaded from blue to teal as the pitch rises - a kit becomes an instrument without leaving the screen you were already on.
The grid walks the scale from the root instead of every semitone, so nothing under your finger is out of key. Octave moves the whole grid.
When the source pad is sliced, the cells address its slices instead. The same grid plays a chopped break the way it plays a melody.
Each cell writes a step at the pitch you played. Note repeat and the hold-to-erase gesture keep working, and velocity is shaped afterwards in the sequencer's lane.
One tap. A thousand starting points.
The Randomator rolls real sound and mixer parameters across all sixteen tracks - pitch, sample start, envelope, velocity, pan, level, the two aux sends, even bit depth and trig probability - and you can re-roll it endlessly without losing the kit you started from: every roll is measured from the sound each track had before it was randomized. The channel column is an amount, from that sound to the full variation and back. Lock the sounds you love so they never move, and scope exactly what gets touched. It's built to surprise you, never to make noise.

Pulsark on iPhone is its own compact, portrait interface - the same engine, the same projects and the full product: Sample kit, Record, Generator, Sequencer, Randomator, Song and Mixer. The mixer is upright channel strips scrolled sideways like a console, and the sample editor is the same one, pinch zoom and all. Only the iPad and Mac exclusives stay behind: the Orbit and Euclid sub-modes, velocity editing, the per-pad modulation controls, the fill randomizer, MIDI learn and the shortcut catalogue.

Standalone, Pulsark opens every MIDI port it finds, so a keyboard or pad controller is connected the moment it appears - and how hard you play decides how loud the pad sounds, and what an armed take writes into the step. Going the other way, each of the sixteen tracks can send its notes on its own channel while still playing its own sample. Inside a host, the host delivers the MIDI instead.
